WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ALTITUDE
Boulder is 5,363 feet above sea level. Please be aware that significant changes in altitude can cause some people to experience altitude sickness, which is caused by lower levels of oxygen. Susceptibility to altitude sickness is not dependent on age, sex, or physical condition. The most common form of altitude sickness is acute mountain sickness (AMS), which affects 20-30% of visitors to Colorado. The occurrence of AMS is related to altitude, speed of ascent, physical exertion and prior acclimatization. Symptoms include headache, nausea, weakness, vomiting, and trouble sleeping. Symptoms usually go away on their own by the fourth day at high altitude. People with severe symptoms should see a doctor.
To help minimize the effects of altitude sickness, we recommend that you:
- Drink plenty of water. Start hydrating 2-3 days before you travel, and continue throughout your stay in Boulder.
- Limit strenuous exercise when you reach Boulder.
- Avoid or decrease alcohol consumption. It is much easier to become dehydrated here.
- You may also want to use sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15.
