CMBPol Mission Concept Study Telecon notes 23 January, 2008 Participants: Bock, Borrill, Cooray, Dodelson, Hanany, Irwin, Lee, Meyer, Page, Shimon, Tran - Did I miss someone? ____________________________________________________________ Workshop Updates: Systematic Workshop in Maryland. Three venues have the dates July 28 - 30 open. Need to couple analysis issues into all three workshops. ____________________________________________________________ Aspen Slides (Hanany) Slides outlining the goals of the PPPDT and the CMBPol Mission Concept Study will be presented at the Aspen meeting this week. ____________________________________________________________ Detailed Study Status: Scanning strategy (Meyer reports from Gorski input) Existing analysis for EPIC for spinning spacecraft observing can be modified for proposed missions. A pointed experiment will need some work and Gorski has been in discussion with Hinshaw about this. Calibration of bolometric instruments will be incorporate this into scanning considerations. Optics (Lee) Optics study starting point is EPIC - two systems: low resolution refractor and high resolution reflector ~ 2 meter crossed Dragone system likely. For the high resolution system, would extend the analysis for EPIC to include a mass and size calculation. Issues to explore: mass <-> aperture cold primary -> more compact with aggressive illumination. science <-> beamsize [coupling to theory workshop] Intermediate aperture ~1 m? systematics, shielding, scanning [coupling to systematics workshop] engineering of optics [coupling to technology workshop] ____________________________________________________________ Upcoming: Future telecon discussions: 1. remaining detailed studies, Lensing (Zaldarriaga) and Systematics (Keating). 2. The two mission concepts. (Bock and Seiffert) I am not sure of when we can have these telecons because of people's travel schedule. I will keep you informed. Following that we will await the decision on the proposal and resume telecons after our success.
